FRANKFORT, KY (WAVE) - Republicans are working to rally their base after a tough primary election. Kentucky GOP leaders headed to the party's Frankfort headquarters for a Unity Rally Saturday.

"The only way you make public policy in this country is to win the general election," Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said.

Those attending included Republican Senate Nominee Dr. Rand Paul. He defeated Secretary of State Trey Grayson in the Tuesday Primary.

"The people of Kentucky spoke loudly and clearly last Tuesday and Rand Paul did a great job because people know he is conservative," Republican District 1 Congressman Ed Whitfield said at the rally.

Paul made national headlines for more than his primary win this week. The candidate ruffled feathers after he publicly questioned the government's role in ending discrimination in privately owned businesses. Later he issued a statement saying he "unequivocally...will not support efforts to repeal the Civil Rights Act of 1964."

Still when officials with NBC's "meet the Press wanted to continue talking about the comments. Paul's campaign called it "a dead issue" and one of the reasons they canceled an interview for Sunday's show.

" I think frankly you create another story when you cancel an appearance on Meet the Press. I think he's only adding to that now by not trying to button this up," Host David Gregory said.

Still Paul's stance on the role of government is clear.

"What unifies Republicans is the belief that the constitution restrains the size and scope of government," Paul said at the Saturday rally.

Party leaders want more Republicans in Congress and they are pushing for party unity to achieve it. This includes backing their candidate for Senate, hoping to capitalize on differences with the democratic leadership in Washington.

Issues highlighted included the country's debt, leaders criticizing bailouts made by the Obama Administration. Dr. Rand Paul will face Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway in the General Election.
