Indiana prisons chief outlines steps to prevent rape

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (AP) - Indiana's corrections commissioner says his agency has increased camera surveillance at the Pendleton Juvenile Correctional Facility and worked to improve screening of staff since a study found one of the highest rates of sexual abuse in the U.S.

Commissioner Edwin G. Buss made the comments before the Review Panel on Prison Rape in Washington this week.

Pendleton was one of five facilities scrutinized by the panel. Two of the facilities reported low levels of sexual abuse, while three had relatively high rates.

A January Bureau of Justice Statistics report said 36 percent of youths at Pendleton reported being sexually victimized either by staff or other teens.

The U.S. Department of Justice also is investigating conditions at Pendleton.
