LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - More than 25,000 people packed Churchill Downs on the first night of Downs after Dark. This year, the track decided to have a different theme on each night.

The kickoff was Disco at the Downs. People were encouraged to dress in '70s attire. There was a dance competition and costume contest. The hottest '70s disco music blasted throughout the track as people boogied down under the Twin Spires. General admission is $10.

But not everyone dressed up. Many people said they went to enjoy the races and watch the horses compete under the lights.

Last year, after the three-day night racing trial Churchill Downs decided to invest $4 million for permanent lighting. On average, each night last year 30,000 people went to the track.

There are five more Downs after Dark this year. The next one is June 18 and the theme is South Beach. The other themes for the night racings dates are:

  • June 25, Dress to impress
  • July 2, An American party: boots, brew, and BBQ
  • October 31, Spirits and Spires
  • November 19, Home for the Holidays

Doors open at 4, but on the Oct. 31 and Nov. 19, things get underway at 2:30 p.m.
