LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Hardin County woman on vacation in Hampton, VA died Sunday, July 4 when the boat her 8-year old son was driving crashed into a pier after a family day on the water.

45-year old Elizabeth J. Elliott of Glendale died from injuries she suffered in the accident. An adult on the boat reportedly was allowing her son, David James Elliott, to steer the boat at the time of the accident.

A report from WAVY-TV in Norfolk, Virginia said the child "veered the boat into and underneath the pier". Mrs. Elliott was sitting in the front of the boat when it struck the pier. The television station report says John Bull, Director of Public Relations for the Marine Resources Commission of Virginia said "the boat hit the pier and then kind of submarined underneath the pier. The woman at the front of the boat was thrown back from the collision and from the impact."

Mrs. Elliott was taken to Riverside Hospital where she died.

Elizabeth Elliott was an Air Force veteran of Operation Desert Storm and served ten years in the military. She owned Tin Liz E's antique store in Sonora, KY.

In addition to her son, Mrs. Elliott is survived by her husband, Dr. David G. Elliott.

Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday in Hampton, VA.
