Two dead in crash at Outer Loop and Grade Lane

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Two people were killed early Wednesday in a head-on collision near Fairdale. It happened around 6 a.m. at the Outer Loop and Grade Lane.

"It's a very horrific accident for the simple fact that two lives were lost," said LMPD spokesman Dwight Mitchell.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the crash.

"A woman driving a red Mitsubishi Mirage apparently for some unknown reason crossed over into the center lane of traffic," Mitchell said.

She was headed northbound on Grade Lane when she veered into the southbound lane, colliding with an oncoming BMW.

"As a result of the collision, the driver of the BMW was pronounced dead at the scene," Mitchell said. "The passenger in the Mitsubishi was also pronounced dead at the scene."

Emergency responders had to cut the top off of the Mitsubishi to extricate the people inside.

The driver of that car is the only survivor of the crash and is really the only one who knows what happened.

"We haven't ruled out any factors at this point," Mitchell said. "We're still in the early stages of this investigation."

Nearby streets were closed for about four hours for clean-up as accident reconstructionists tried to piece together what led to the crash.

The identities of the two men who died were not immediately available.

Police also aren't releasing the name or condition of the survivor - the driver of the red car.
