LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Police are looking for answers after two men were shot around 2 o'clock Wednesday morning in the city's south end at the Iroquois Housing Project.

Officers arrived at 1607 Squires Drive to find a man lying on the steps.

"They located a male subject who'd been shot," said LMPD Officer Carey Klain. "That subject was transported to University Hospital. He was later pronounced dead from his injuries, a gunshot wound to the chest."

While emergency responders were dealing with that victim, they discovered another victim nearby.

Police say the second shooting victim suffered only minor injuries and refused medical treatment. The names of the two victims are not being released at this time, pending notification of family.

"I just came out to see what was going on and found out someone was shot and killed," said LaTonya Long. "I'm just ready to go away from here. I'll be glad when they tear all these buildings down."

Neighbors told us the deceased victim is in his mid-20s and was living with his girlfriend in the unit.

"It's really sad," Long said. "They just had a new born baby born. She's probably like 2 or 3 months old I know that much. It's sad."

Neighbors say they often see police in the area dealing with crime. A search through the WAVE 3 archives finds police responded to a shooting there in April of 2010, and another fatal shooting there in March of 2009.

"It's terrible. It's terrible. It's just got out of hand, it really has," Long said in disbelief of what was happening.

Police spent several hours on the scene, combing the area for evidence like bullets and shell casings in the front yard that may help them put the pieces of this puzzle together.
