Female ROTC cadet dies from lightning strike at Ft. Knox

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – An 18 year-old woman died Friday after being struck by lighting on July 27 at Fort Knox.

According to Deputy Coroner Jim Wesley, Carmela Kirkland of Dothan, AL died of complications due to a lightning strike, at University Hospital at 4:50 p.m. Friday. 

Anne Torphy, the public affairs officer for Fort Knox said, that Kirkland and one other cadet were involved in an incident near the Muldraugh area of the post on Tuesday.

Trophy said, Kirkland was struck by the lightning at 3:00 p.m. and was initially given medical attention at the scene and then taken to Ireland Army Hospital on the post. She was then taken by air ambulance to University Hospital in Louisville.

The second cadet injured was standing nearby Kirkland, but was not directly struck by the lightning. That cadet was also given medical treatment at the scene and was listed as stable at Ireland Army Hospital.
