LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The 19-year-old Bullitt County woman missing since July 20 has been found. Brittney Kustes is out of the hospital after receiving medical attention at University Hospital late Friday.
Lori Kustes spoke with us outside University Hospital late Friday afternoon, not long after her daughter was admitted.
"She's in there getting an exam," Kustes said. "She's being checked out all over, but she's alive and she's going to be OK."
Kustes broke down when she described seeing her daughter for the first time in two weeks.
"It was the most wonderful feeling of my life," she said. "I'll never forget it."
Kustes says her daughter told her she has been through a lot during the past two weeks, but she was too emotional to talk about it on camera.
"She's been through a traumatic experience," Kustes said. "She's not very well. She's not well at all."
Kustes was believed to be in the custody of a convicted sex offender, 34-year-old Roy Vernon Elwell. She was set to appear in court to testify against Elwell on July 28.
Bullit County Sheriff's Detective Scotty McGaha thanked the many law enforcement agencies who assisted in finding Brittney, including U.S. Marshals, Kentucky State Police and Indiana State Police as well as LMPD.
McGaha says Brittney is extremely upset.
"It's going to take some time," McGaha said. "And obviously the investigation will continue."
McGaha did not want to get into specifics about Brittney's condition.
"I don't want to get into specifics," McGaha said. "There have been some reports of some bruising on her and that, but I don't want to get into specifics because it's still an ongoing investigation."
Police believe that Elwell is driving a green Pontiac Grand Prix with damage to the driver's side door. Elwell is thought to be armed and dangerous.
If you know the whereabouts of Elwell or the green Pontiac Grand Prix, call 911 or Bullitt County Dispatch at 502-955-7480.
McGaha says Elwell may be driving other vehicles as well - and he could be armed.
"I understand now he may be driving several vehicles," McGaha said. "We were told early on this afternoon that he may even be armed. He may be in a variety of vehicles now. We had reports of a green Pontiac Grand Prix he may be in with damage to the driver's door, but we think he may have changed vehicles by now."
McGaha says Elwell has been seen in Glasgow, Spencer, Bullitt and Jefferson County.
