LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Bullitt County woman has been released from University Hospital one day after she was found alive. Authorities say 19-year-old Brittney Kustes disappeared nearly two weeks ago and the search continues for the man believed to be behind it. 34-year-old Roy Vernon Elwell is listed as a lifetime registered sex offender, last spotted off Interstate-65 and in the Fairdale area Friday July 30th.
"They were dispatching police cars to try to get to him. I know the U.S. Marshals service was closing in on him yesterday and he was able to get away from him before they had actually gotten to him," Bullitt County Detective Scotty McGaha said. "Some other police vehicles were looking for him and they got pretty close, but then he was able to elude them and take an exit and we don't know where he went from there."
Detectives describe Elwell as possibly armed, dangerous and well connected. He has been seen in Jefferson, Bullitt and Spencer counties and Tompkinsville, Kentucky in Monroe County last weekend according to authorities. He is believed to be driving a vehicle described as an aqua-green Pontiac Grand Prix.
"He has got a lot of friends in this area, a lot of acquaintances so he has been in this area a lot in the past," Det. Mcgaha said."We believe he could be changing vehicles. We understand he has access to a lot of vehicles. We've had some call-ins on him being seen with other people, most of the calls we've received not with the same person, but he has been with other people."
McGaha described Elwell as "infatuated" with Kustes and said Kustes has been moved to a safe place as this investigation continues. The detective says another female came forward this week, claiming she was hurt by Elwell too.
"Some of the things she has told us pretty much confirm things that Brittney has told us, that it is almost like you are looking at the exact same case," McGaha said. "These women went through some things that are horrible and there are a lot of similarities out there to both of them. That's consistent and that's frightening."
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Roy Vernon Elwell is asked to contact police.
