FANCY FARM, KY (WAVE) - It's been a Kentucky tradition for 130 years. Some of the biggest political names in the state came together to campaign, cheer, and heckle at Fancy Farm.
This time, what started as a little church picnic is getting national attention. Over the years, the bigwigs in Kentucky politics have spoken at St. Jerome Catholic Church's annual picnic in Western Kentucky.
But, when the festivities started, it was anything but a church service. Thousands came out for the United States Senate race. Political heavyweights on both sides of the aisle stumping for their candidates.
"Jack Conway is for Obama Care," said Republican Minority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. McConnel is supporting candidate Rand Paul.
"Jack Conway knows how to balance a budget, he's done it eight times," said Governor Steve Beshear. "This guy over here (Rand Paul) talks about balancing a budget but, he's never done it." Beshear is supporting Jack Conway.
Democrat Jack Conway came out swinging, painting his opponent Rand Paul as a waffle.
"What did Rand Paul say to the families along the Gulf Coast who lost their jobs and way of life because of BP?..Accidents happen," said Democratic Candidate for U.S. Senate Jack Conway.
Republican Rand Paul fired back saying Conway is too liberal for Kentucky.
"I say to Nancy Pelosi come on down to Kentucky and campaign with Jack," said Republican Candidate for U.S. Senate Rand Paul. "You can talk about cap and trade and Obama Care all you want."
Fancy farm is the kick-off to the fall campaign season. If there is already this much interest, things will just keep heating up through November.
