MELBOURNE, KY (FOX19/WAVE) - Emergency officials in Campbell County say a man who went missing  early Sunday morning in the Ohio river has been found alive after he swam across the Ohio River.

According to Campbell County authorities, rescue crews began searching the river around 6 a.m. after a 30-year-old man disappeared while swimming near Ross.

"Basically we got a call this morning at 6 a.m. that the subject apparently went for a swim off the nose of the dock and family members tried to coax him back in, from there they lost where the subject went to," said John Griswold with Campbell County Emergency Rescue.

Police say the man may have been missing for an hour before they arrived.

The area that he disappeared from is a campground, according to local residents.

"I figured someone fell in the water or [it was] a boating accident or something but the more details I got, it was someone we knew, [what a] terrible situation," said Mike Humphreys

Later Sunday morning, rescue crews say they did find an object at the bottom of the Ohio River that may be the body of a missing man.

"The image looks like a possible victim." says Brad Walton, Emergency Management Agency.

The man's identity has not been released.
