Church expects to buy former Lexington mall

LEXINGTON, KY (AP) - A church expects to buy a defunct mall in Lexington and reopen it as a religious facility.

Senior executive pastor Chris Hahn told the Lexington Herald-Leader that he didn't see any reason the church would not move forward on Aug. 30 with purchasing the vacant mall, which has been in disrepair since Dillard's closed in 2005.

The church received an estimate last week of $30 million to buy and renovate the 30-acre site on Richmond Road.

Pastor Jon Weece told the congregation over the weekend that he would detail how the project could be funded during sermons on Sept. 4 and 5.

Hahn says the announcement was, essentially, the beginning of a capital fund drive for $30 million.
