LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A big redevelopment project is now underway in the Shelby Park and Smoketown neighborhoods. New Directions Housing Corporation is turning a nearly 40 year old apartment complex into new, affordable apartments.
There's a lot of work that needs to be done at the Jackson Woods Apartments. Officials say the multi-million dollar project will create or save 80 local jobs. Construction work is already underway at the complex. On August 30, Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY 3rd) was in town and announced the final funding, in the form of government money, is now in place.
Yarmuth presented a check for $475,000 to the New Directions Housing Corporation. The total project will cost $7.7 million and will end with 60 updated units.
"It's a part of a comprehensive work we're trying to do in this neighborhood to really make this a neighborhood of choice. Capital is just a part of it, the physical facilities, the neighborhood is in the midst of a quality of life planning activity," Joe Gliessner with New Directions said.
The renovations of the six buildings are expected to be wrapped up by June 2011.
