Sawmill fire in Orange County could burn for days

FRENCH LICK, IN (WAVE) - Firefighters in southern Indiana are on the scene of a sawmill fire at 2514 South Country Road just outside of French Lick.

According to Orange County's EMA Director Rick Emrick, the fire at the Pendley Sawmill was first reported just after 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. The Orange County Sheriff's Department responded and observed smoke and an orange glow in the area, then called for help. The first firefighters began arriving around 3 a.m.

Fire crews are focusing on containing the fire so it doesn't spread to nearby structures. Crews from the Hoosier National Forest Service planned to burn everything near the fire to help prevent it from causing the dry foliage in the area to ignite.

We're told the fire crews have the blaze 80 percent contained, but it will likely continue to burn for several days.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Emrick says the sawmill caught fire in 2006.
