BULLITT COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - Another day, another fire: that's what life is becoming for many area firefighters after an almost unprecedented amount of grass and other fires are sweeping through Kentuckiana.

Tuesday, October 12 at Noon, Bullitt County became the 38th Kentucky county to have put a burn ban in effect.  Officials across the area are trying to get the word out about the dire situation, as conditions are creating the perfect storm for any fire - like a backyard brush fire - to quickly turn into an inferno that could sweep through a community.

"Bullitt County, like every county in Kentucky, has been going through a period of severe drought. Now we have high temperatures and low humidity. it's a ripe situation for fires that are a danger to the public," said Mike Riordan of the Bullitt County Emergency Management Department.

"Unfortunately there have been several fires in Bullitt County that were extensive and they were spread by the conditions that are being dealt with by this burning ban," Riordan said.

Firefighters have been working 'round the clock to get those fires under control.  Now county leaders hope the ban will further beef up those efforts during these dry days, by doing more than just slapping the wrists of violators.

"Someone would be subject to prosecution for violation of that order, pursuant to Kentucky code and could suffer a fine and or jail time," said Bullitt County Attorney Walt Sholar.
