INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Police say an off-duty Marion County sheriff's deputy fatally shot a man who tried to rob him and two friends at gunpoint while they played cards in the garage of his Indianapolis home.
Sheriff's Department Deputy Chief Michael Turner says the man with a hood pulled over his face entered through a side door Monday night, pointed a gun and demanded money. The Indianapolis Star reports the deputy then pulled his gun and ordered the man to freeze, but Turner said the robber began shooting and the deputy returned fire.
Turner says the deputy has worked at the Marion County Jail for about three years.
The names of the man killed and the deputy weren't immediately released.
