LOUISVLLE, KY (WAVE) - Both sides are getting ready for the trial of the Louisville mother accused of killing her two kids and holding a University of Louisville counselor hostage. Gail Coontz is set to have a jury trial in December.
We've followed this story closely since it happened in March of 2008. We're now less than six weeks away from trial. Coontz, her lawyers, and lawyers for the Commonwealth were in court today before Judge Mary Shaw. Coontz is accused of killing her 14 year old and 10 year old while they slept in their Okolona home.
Her lawyer Mike Lemke says he has some more evidence in the case he'll hand over to the Commonwealth this week. He asked the judge for another pre-trial conference before the trial. "There's always something that occurs toward the end. If we have a date set aside maybe we won't use it, but it's easier to try now than during jury selection week," Lemke said.
All sides will be back in court November 29th, just four days before the trial. In addition to two counts of murder, Coontz faces several other charges. Police say she held a UofL counselor hostage on campus after killing her kids. No one was hurt in that hostage situation.
