Fort Campbell soldier to receive high honor

FORT CAMPBELL, KY (AP) - A Fort Campbell soldier is about to receive a high honor for rescuing a woman from a vehicle that was under water in Tennessee last summer.

Spec. Jose A. Ortiz-Fernandez will receive the Soldier's Medal on Friday.

The post says Ortiz-Fernandez was at a park near the Cumberland River near Clarksville on June 19 when he saw a woman drive her vehicle onto a boat ramp and into the water. The award citation says he dove into the water and freed the woman from the vehicle, then swam with her while she was unconscious for more than 40 feet to reach shore.

Ortiz-Fernandez stabilized the woman until emergency workers arrived.

He is a member of the 63rd Chemical Company.

The post says the Soldier's Medal is the highest award a soldier can receive for an act of valor in a non-combat situation.
