NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) - Will the newly elected lawmakers raise or lower taxes? There are advertisements on both sides of the river claiming Republicans are calling for a 23% sales tax.
"It doesn't tell the whole story," said Joe Wert, an Indiana University Southeast political scientist, "because what these candidates have also been saying is they would like to get rid of the income tax and the payroll tax."
Indiana's 9th District is seeing these advertisements with the race between Baron Hill and Todd Young. Kentucky's US Senate race between Rand Paul and Jack Conway has also involved these ads.
"I think it's kind of interesting here," said Wert, "because we have the Democratic candidates saying that if you vote for a Republican your taxes are going to be raised. It's typically the other way around."
Wert also said he thinks the ads would have been more effective earlier in the races while there were more undecided voters.
