LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - 160 of Kentucky's finest are headed to Afghanistan. The Kentucky National Guard is mobilizing members from the 123rd Airlift Wing in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
The Guard members have been preparing for the deployment for the past six months. Family and loved ones gathered Saturday to say their good-bye's.
Lara Stanley said she plans on keeping in touch with her husband through Skype and emails. "Toughest part is just him being away and not having that companionship and also worry if something is wrong," said Stanley.
The deployed members will work alongside guardsman from Missouri and Wyoming conducting tactical lift operations of resupply and troop movement.
The Air Guard members will be gone for 60 days, long enough to miss Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's.
Thirty Airmen left Saturday, the rest of will be leaving over the next two weeks.
