KY high schools to participate in contest

FRANKFORT, KY (AP) - Twenty high schools across Kentucky have been chosen to participate in a poetry recitation contest.

Called Poetry Out Loud, the program encourages high school students to learn about poetry through memorization and recitation. It is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.

Winners of school-wide competitions advance to the state competition.

The state finals will be held in March 2011 in Frankfort. The winner will receive $200 and a trip to Washington, D.C., to compete for the national championship. The winner's school will receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books.
