2 charged after guardrail found in their van

CORBIN, KY (AP) - Police in Corbin have charged two men with felony theft after highway guardrails and equipment from a high school were stolen.

Charles Newkirk and Robert Mills were arrested on felony theft charges, reports WKYT-TV in Lexington.

The suspects told the station on Wednesday that they were innocent, but police say they found a guardrail, beams, cable, nuts and bolts in Newkirk's van.

Police say the men claimed the state hired them to remove some guardrail, but the highway department said that wasn't true.

Police had been seeking the van after other thefts, including a backhoe bucket stolen at Corbin High School.

Both are charged with theft by unlawful taking.
