Fire in Old Louisville leaves nearly a dozen people without a home

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Firefighters say eleven people are without a home Sunday night after a fire destroyed an apartment building.

It happened in the 900 block of South First Street near Old Louisville. Louisville Fire and Rescue got the report of the fire around 7:30 p.m. and had it under control within 30 minutes.

Firefighters tell WAVE 3 no one was injured but, the Red Cross is stepping in to help those who lost their home.

One resident says he tried to warn others.

"I heard the alarms go off because the building has fire alarms, smoke detectors and extinguishes all throughout the building," said resident James Hewet. "We heard the fire alarm go off and ran up and looked out and the curtain looked on fire to me. I ran up and kicked the door in and it was to dark to get in."

Firefighters say the fire may have started on the top floor. The cause has not been determined and arson is investigating, which is standard procedure.
