LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Three suspects were in court Monday after Kentucky State Police discovered the body of 18-year-old Mackenzie "Mack" Smyser of Louisville late Friday in an area off KY 313 near Fort Knox. He had been shot multiple times.
On Monday, the three 18-year-olds charged in the shooting - Connor Galenski, Ryan Wilt and Jason Gowers - were arraigned in Hardin County on murder charges.
A tip led police to Smyser's body late Nov. 4. Police believe that a fight over money may have led to the shooting.
Gowers grandmother, Margaret Young, came to her grandson's court appearance. She says the last time she saw Gowers, he was six months old. Young told WAVE 3 she is trying to make sense of it all.
"I couldn't understand why Jason would do something like this," said Young. "It's his best friend. Over $130, does not make any sense to me."
Police say Galenski and Gowers pulled the trigger, shooting Smyser four times in the head and chest. Authorities say the trio confessed to the murder.
Galenski, Wilt and Gowers will remain in jail unless they can post bond. Bond for all three was set at $500,000.
Their next court date is set for Nov. 15.
A Facebook page in memory of Smyser has been set up. Visitation for Smyser is Tuesday from Noon until 8pm at Evergreen Funeral Home on Preston Highway. A celebration of his life is set for Noon on Wednesday.
