LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Kentucky lawmaker wants to make penalties tougher for people who abuse the elderly.
State Representative Jodi Jenkins would like to make a person convicted of neglect of an elderly person liable for anything that's taken from the person. This would including property and inheritance.
The state would then take that money and create a trust fund to help organizations prevent elder abuse. Community activists said neglect is a big problem everywhere.
"When I begin to tell a story," said Becky Smith of Guardicare, "of what I may have seen or been a party to, and they go 'Oh my gosh! That wasn't here was it?'"
Jenkins said organizations need the help to prevent elder abuse and help council victims of the crime. Smith warns Kentuckians not to assume the problems are elsewhere.
"It's in every zip code in Jefferson County," said Smith.
