Nearly 2 million new Ind court cases filed in 2009

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - An annual state report says nearly 2 million new cases were filed in Indiana courts in 2009 - the second highest number ever.

The 2009 Indiana Judicial Service Report says the number of cases filed in state courts has increased by 16.5 percent since 2000.

The report says operating the court system cost the state, cities, counties and townships nearly $400 million last year.

Chief Justice Randall Shepard says the statistics show that about 2,530,000 people had a case work its way through the Indiana court system last year.
