CRAWFORDSVILLE, IN (AP) - A 24-year-old man has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to charges he fatally shot his older brother without apparent provocation at the family's rural central Indiana home. Chad Byrd of New Richmond entered the plea to the murder charge during a Montgomery County court hearing Thursday.
Prosecutors say 26-year-old Jacob Byrd was sitting on a couch when his brother raised a shotgun to his head and fired the fatal shot last year. Defense attorney Sarah Houston Dicks tells the Journal & Courier that Byrd has undergone treatment for schizophrenia since age 17. Byrd faces a sentence of 45 years to 65 years in prison.
He was convicted of battery and resisting arrest for a 2003 scuffle after which then-New Richmond Town Marshal Richard Clapp suffered a fatal heart attack.
