CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - A proposal that would allow the city of Cincinnati to purchase the Gamble House using eminent domain was voted on Tuesday during a meeting of the Livable Communities Committee.
The vote was tied 4 to 4 in committee. The tied vote means that the proposal will be voted on again during Wednesday's full city council meeting.
Eminent domain is used in most cases to obtain properties to demolish for city use. Charlie Winburn, the council member who made the proposal, says that this is a different use of eminent domain.
"What we're doing here is being real creative and using imminent domain to preserve a building, a historical building that is significant to the citizens of Cincinnati," said Winburn, outside of council. "Proctor and Gamble, Ivory Soap, this is what this is all about. Preserving the legacy of Mr. Gamble so that we can create some jobs here so we can attract tourist to Westwood and use this as an opportunity for economic development for Westwood."
