BERLIN (AP) - Authorities in southwestern Germany say they believe a man and a woman who were killed in a shootout with police after robbing a bank in Karlsruhe were a notorious couple known as the "Gentlemen Thieves."
Karlsruhe police said a 28-year-old officer who suffered a gunshot wound in the incident Friday was in stable condition Saturday.
Prosecutors said that papers on the robbers' bodies identified them as a 38-year-old woman and her 40-year-old husband. Both were Czech citizens. They believe the pair had committed more than 21 robberies in southwestern Germany since 1995, making off with some euro 2 million ($2.65 million).
Police said they found the money stolen Friday on the man's body and returned it to the bank.
