BELL, Calif. (AP) - An auditing firm will undergo an outside review over its failure to flag fraud and mismanagement in the Southern California city of Bell.
The Los Angeles Times said in a Saturday story that the firm of Mayer Hoffman McCann hired an independent accounting company to review its practices.
Firm spokesman Joe Crivelli says the accounting company will review the auditor's California government work within the next 60 days.
Reviews take place every three years, but this one was moved up after the scandals in Bell, where city leaders raised salaries and allegedly levied illegal taxes and wrongly loaned public money.
Crivelli defended his firm, saying it is not the job of an auditor to reveal excessive salaries. He says Bell officials may have concealed information from auditors.
