Officer injured in shooting releases statement

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Louisville Metro Police officer injured after a shooting Dec. 7 has released a statement. Officer Kevin "Jody" Speaks was shot. He and his partner, Jeffrey Lauder, were working undercover for a special task force. Chief Robert White says the plain clothes officers responded to a call of a man carrying a gun near 33rd and Portland.

LMPD arrested 19-year old Danta Watts, Jr. around 3:30 a.m Wednesday morning. Watts is charged with 2 counts of criminal attempted murder of a police officer.

Officer Kevin "Jody" Speaks and his family would like to take this opportunity let the community know that he is on track to make a full recovery after being shot in the line of duty this past Tuesday night. He is in good condition and progressing well.

Officer Speaks and his family would also like to publicly thank all of the officers that responded that night, as well as Fire, EMS, and the doctors who cared for him. They also want to acknowledge the tremendous outpouring of support from Chief White and the LMPD, as well as the Mayor's office and the Louisville Metro Police Foundation during this time. Officer Speaks and his family are very grateful for the support, prayers and encouragement from so many in the community, and thank God that no one was more seriously injured in the shooting. The family asks for your continued thoughts and prayers during the next days and months.
