LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - University of Louisville head basketball coach Rick Pitino confirmed to WAVE 3 Sports that he is talking with the Puerto Rico National team about coaching the team in the Olympic qualifying tournament next August in Argentina.
"I'm thinking about it this weekend," Pitino said. "I want to meet with J.J. Barea and Carlos Arroyo before I do it."
Barea and Arroyo are both native Puerto Ricans, who currently play in the NBA. Barea for the Dallas Mavericks and Arroyo for the Miami Heat.
"It is a big committment, but 50% of what I'm doing is going to help the University of Louisville," Pitino added. "I'm not getting compensated if I decide to do it. It's all for (a) the challenge, and (b) to help recruiting in a lot of ways, like Coach K has been doing with the U.S., and (c) to help our team who is going to take a foreign trip and possibly play against this team. There are the a lot of things that help the University of Louisville. It comes down to whether everybody is committed on the same page to win, because they've got to finish in the top two, excluding the U.S., to get a bid to the Olympics, and that's not easy."
Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski has been the head coach of the U.S. National team since 2006.
