LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - There's no telling what can happen when CATS and CARDS fans are in the same room for a rivalry game. This year real excitement happened off the court and inside AMVETS Post #9 in Germantown when two diehard fans tied the knot.
Joe Houchin met his now wife Paula at the bar inside the Post 20 years ago. For financial reasons the couple decided to marry, but a friend had the crazy idea three days earlier to do it at halftime of the University of Louisville's basketball game against the University of Kentucky.
"I'm a big diehard UofL fan," said Houchin. "We've got a Cardinal's club here which we have about 40 members and the halftime just seemed like a good idea."
Dozens of family and friends decked out in red and blue cheered on their loved ones.
"I've been waiting for it forever and now that it's actually here," said Paula's daughter who has known Joe most of her life. "I don't know. I'm just happy."
Paula was in the traditional bride color--white, but hers was a Louisville t-shirt. She somehow found a spot for something blue.
"She put a UK sticker on her butt," said her now mother-in-law Dolly Houchin laughing.
The couple got their marriage papers on Thursday and had Justice of the Peace Gary Fields marry them.
