Republican says she won't run for Evansville mayor

EVANSVILLE, IN (AP) - Former Republican Vanderburgh County commissioner Cheryl Musgrave says she won't run for mayor of Evansville.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports that GOP leaders had identified Musgrave as a potential first-tier candidate for the office now held by Democrat Jonathan Weinzapfel. Musgrave previously led the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance and came close to defeating Democratic Rep. Gail Riecken of Evansville in 2010.

Musgrave has said city boundaries will make it difficult to elect a Republican mayor. She says the task is not impossible, but is not the right fit for her now.

Other potential GOP candidates include County Commissioner Lloyd Winnecke and County Councilman Russ Lloyd Jr., who haven't announced their intentions.

Weinzapfel is considering a run for governor in 2012 and could announce his plans soon.
