LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Louisville Metro Police say I-71 is cleared after a deadly multi-vehicle crash that appeared to be caused by a fallen ladder.

LMPD spokesperson Alicia Smiley said the accident happened around 5:40 p.m. Jan. 6 at mile marker 11 in Jefferson County near the Oldham County line. Smiley says the chain of events started when a black car traveling north on 71 swerved to avoid hitting a ladder and caused a Mustang behind the black car to slam on its brakes.

The driver of a semi behind the Mustang swerved to avoid hitting it, and Smiley says he then overcorrected, causing the truck to break through the cable barrier into the southbound lanes, where it slammed into another tractor-trailer.

According to police, the driver of the second semi was killed. Another person was taken to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Both the northbound and southbound lanes of I-71 were closed for several hours while the LMPD Traffic Unit investigated the crash. Northbound traffic was flowing again by 11 p.m., but southbound lanes remained closed and traffic was backed up for miles into Oldham County.

Police opened the remaining lanes around 5 a.m.

Smiley says drivers must make sure any loose objects on their car are secure, and advises drivers who see debris or other objects in the roadway to call 911.
