FRANKFORT, KY (WAVE) - Senator Rand Paul wants to cut way down on spending to find ways to balance the federal budget.

Paul wants to slash programs to save $500 billion in one calendar year - a decision that would include a 30 percent reduction on food stamps for the poor.

A legislative proposal introduced on Jan. 25 would take away $42 billion from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's food stamp program. The proposal would also do away with programs such as the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Paul wants to abolish and reduce the amount of money spent on what he considers to be the most wasteful programs in hopes of returning to spending levels in 2008.

Paul, a Republican, says he hopes this proposal will stimulate dialogue and discussions within the Senate concerning how to repair the national economy.
