Louisvillians fight for charter schools

FRANKFORT, KY (WAVE) - The head of Jefferson County Public Schools is against it and so is the teacher's union, but that didn't stop two dozen or so folks taking a bus from Louisville from and heading to the Capitol to tell legislators they want charter schools.  Once they arrived there were about 60 people inside the rotunda for the rally.

A charter school bill already passed the Senate, but so far the House hasn't touched it and may not even give it a reading. Senate Bill 3 also includes neighborhood schools.

In the past, the House has not supported charter school legislation. After SB 3 passed the full Senate Rep. Carl Rollins, Education Chair in the House, said it was unlikely he would give the bill a reading. Still several dozen people made the trip to Frankfort to rally for school choice.

"We will have charter schools," said Louisville mother Lenora Yarbrough. "It's a new day. It's a new time and charter schools will be in Kentucky."

Last week, Rollins said he will file a bill promoting innovation in schools as an alternative for charter schools. Rollins could not be reached for comment on this story.
