LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - We haven't heard the last from Karen Sypher or her legal team. Sypher's team promised they would file an appeal. Late in the day on Feb. 21, they made good on that promise.
In the two-page notice of appeal, which was filed just before 4 p.m., they are appealing the sentence of 7 years, 3 months in prison handed down on from federal judge Charles Simpson on Feb. 18.
In Aug. 2010, a jury convicted Sypher of trying to extort $10 million from University of Louisville men's basketball coach Rick Pitino, lying to the FBI and retaliating against a witness.
Sypher is still about four to five weeks away from being notified when and where she will report to for her sentence. Her legal team plans to file a motion for bond pending appeal later this week this means she could be out on bond until the appeal process is over.
Throughout everything, Sypher has always maintained her innocence.
