LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - In honor of women's history month in March, a local restaurant is recognizing a woman whose tragic story caught the attention of the Kentuckiana community.

On Sunday, Cubana Caribbean Cuban Cuisine recognized Rosalina Cano as part of women's history month. Restaurant owner, Mariolis Mora, described being captivated by the mom's tragic story back in 2007, when sanitation workers found 4-year-old Ivan Cano's body in the back of a garbage truck. Rosalina Cano said the day her son disappeared, he unlocked the door and ran out of the house.

"It just touched my heart and then I said, "oh my gosh". It's terrible and she's a Latina like me," Mora said. "{We want to} try to let her know we got Ivan in our hearts and he is still with us 'cause we remember him every time," she continued.

Ever since her son's murder and Cecil New's conviction, Rosalina Cano said she barely has the desire to eat and to sleep. In October, New plead guilty to murder among other charges and two months later Judge Judith McDonald Burkman sentenced new to life in prison instead of the death penalty. Rosalina Cano wanted the death penalty and has hopes that somehow it can still happen. She said with the life sentence New gets to live and may possibly have a life of tranquility. She said it's something she can't get back.

The restaurant plans to honor other Hispanic women the entire month.
