LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - One person was killed and two others were injured in three-car crash Friday morning on Bardstown Road. It happened just before 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of Bardstown Road and Fairmont Road just south of the Gene Snyder Freeway.

Police at the scene say the driver of a silver Ford Focus was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Bardstown Road when it struck a red Dodge Durango and a silver Camaro.

The driver of the Ford Focus died at scene. No word yet on his identity.

Police say one person was in the Durango and they were taken to the hospital. No word yet on their condition. The driver of the Camaro was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Calls to 911 dispatchers indicate the driver of the Focus may have been heading in the wrong for several miles

"We've learned reports that actually he was in the southbound lanes of Bardstown going the wrong way in Mount Washington by the bypass, so this wasn't something that just suddenly occurred," said LMPD spokeswoman Alicia Smiley.

Why the driver ended up in the wrong lane in the first place may never be known.

"It's too early to know whether drugs or alcohol was involved and we'll have to await toxicology reports on that," Smiley said.

The southbound lanes of Bardstown Road at Race Road were closed for roughly five hours.

Police say given the extensive damage to the Camaro and Durango, the drivers of both of those vehicles are lucky to not be seriously injured.

It took emergency responders nearly two-and-a-half hours to get the deceased driver of the Focus out of the car; the car had to be placed back on the ground and crews had to work to pull him out.

His identity was not being released until family members have been notified.
