NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) – Things got a little too close for comfort on the Sherman Minton bridge Saturday afternoon near Louisville after a barge inched its way toward the bridge.
Despite being so close, the barge didn't stop, and bumped into one of the bridge's pillars.
The Sherman Minton bridge is the I-64 bridge that connects New Albany to Louisville.
Despite that collision, officials say it wasn't powerful enough to impact river or vehicle traffic along the bridge.
WAVE 3 News spoke to the Coast Guard who says the barge was not loaded and that there is no visible damage. It's not clear what caused the barge to tap the bridge.
INDOT will check the structural integrity of the bridge as a safety precaution to make sure it is okay. In the meantime, they say it is safe to drive on and the bridge is open.
