LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Eleven middle school students were taken to the hospital Tuesday after another student released pepper spray on their school bus.

According to JCPS spokeswoman Lauren Roberts, it happened around 2:45 p.m. on JCPS Bus #0222. The bus was northbound on Interstate 71 at the 4 mile marker between Indian Hills and Blankenbaker when they were exposed to the pepper spray.

The students were on their way home from Westport Middle School when the incident occurred.

Roberts says the students were complaining of minor nose, ear and throat irritations and were taken to Kosair Hospital as a precaution.

According to Roberts, two female students were allegedly arguing and one sprayed the pepper spray, and the student responsible will be disciplined. It will be up to parents of other students whether to file charges.

The student who released the pepper spray was released to her parents.

The 19 students who were not affected by the spray were continued home on that bus.
