LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A ruling by the Kentucky Attorney General has ended the fight to keep the president of the Jefferson County Teachers Association off the search committee for the new superintendent of the Jefferson County Public Schools.
Attorney General Jack Conway's office ruled that Brent McKim will be allowed to serve on that superintendent search committee.
In a seven page letter to the Jefferson County Board of Education, wrote: "McKim's job as president of the teachers union does not negate his qualifications as a teacher."
The Board of Education got a complaint that McKim should be excluded from serving as a teacher rep on the search committee because he's not working in a classroom anymore. The Board of Education asked the AG to resolve the matter before moving forward with the superintendent search.
After doing some research, the AGs office said McKim should not be removed from the search committee in large part because the union contract between the Board of Education and the teachers association gives the JCTA president "active duty status" as a teacher.
McKim's support for Dr. Sheldon Berman, the ousted JCPS superintendent has made him a target for criticism. There were also accusations McKim tried to get board members who opposed Berman voted out of office. That's something McKim denies.
I spoke with McKim after the ruling was issued and he said he is pleased the Attorney General affirmed the process the JCTA used to choose him as a member of the search committee. McKim also said he is honored to have been elected to serve by Jefferson County Teachers.
