Public meeting for JCPS superintendent search draws small crowd

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - With JCPS Superintendent Dr. Sheldon Berman headed to his new post in Eugene, Oregon in a few months, the search is on for his replacement. Monday night, JCPS wanted to hear from the public to find out what folks are looking for in a new leader.

The first of two public hearings got underway at Gheens Academy.  A six member consulting team from McPherson and Jacobson out of Omaha, Nebraska wanted the public input.

Comments about fresh leadership ranged from long bus rides to keeping diversity to a better emphasis on student achievement and the small group that showed up also wanted to know where everyone was.

Joe Stephenson told the consultants, "I'm troubled because this room is not packed," he continued, "and with all the problems we're having in Jefferson County, I just can't believe I thought the room was going to be packed."

Ben Johnson told the panel, "I think the next superintendent needs to be a strong visible leader within the system as well as within the community and have a proven track record of success in a similar sized district."

Richard Sunblad one of the consultants told WAVE 3 of the need for the public input, "It effects all aspects of the community, not only our educational community but, the economic community, your businesses, good schools that's how you encourage people to move to your area."

There's one more public meeting Tuesday night at the VanHoose Education Center on Newburg Road at 7 PM.

Members of the public who can't attend the meetings can go to jcpsky.net and fill out a survey online.
