LEXINGTON, KY (WAVE) - University of Kentucky fans came out in the cold Wednesday afternoon to send the team off in Lexington. Those fans are ready for the face off against University of Connecticut Saturday night.
WAVE 3 was the only local Louisville TV station in Lexington as the Cats took off. A chartered plane left Blue Grass Airport around 5pm. A small, but dedicated group of UK fans stood out in the cold to wish them luck.
The Cats players are the most popular people right now in Kentucky. Their fans waited in the wings, outside an airport security fence as the team and their support staff loaded onto a chartered plane to take off to Texas.
"It's the best team to follow; the greatest team there is right now. I'm really, really excited about them," UK Fan Tim Livengood said.
It wasn't the biggest or craziest crowd, but those who were there are enthusiastic and optimistic about Saturday night's game. Dedicated Cats fans have waited more than a decade for this Final Four appearance. Now the Wildcats are just one win away from clawing their way into the title game.
"Oh my gosh, it is true blue city all the way here. If you're not from Lexington or Kentucky, you don't know what true blue fans really are," Sheryl Haire said.
Along with all their luggage, the Cats also left with a lot of support from fans as they were waving and taking pictures.
Airport officials are expecting a much larger crowd when the Cats get back Tuesday night.
