LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – She is accused of driving drunk and killing an 11-year-old boy while he was riding his bike. Jurors are now hearing the case against Angela Baumia. Day one of the trial wrapped up Tuesday and it was a long and emotional day for the family of Dylan Geitgey.
Amy Geitgey took the stand and told jurors about the night she saw her son unresponsive and about her boy, who she called, "Little Marine." Mrs. Geitgey broke down when an officer unwrapped the bike Dylan was riding the night police say Baumia hit him.
"He was great. He loved basketball. He wanted to be a marine like his dad. He loved people. He was so caring and so giving. He gave everything. Everybody loved him," Amy Geitgey said.
On the night of June 26, 2010, Louisville Metro Police say Baumia was behind the wheel and drunk after being at a party. Witnesses in the Fincastle neighborhood talked about seeing Baumia run a stop sign, drive recklessly, and fight in the car with her boyfriend before the crash.
Baumia's lawyer says it was an accident and that Baumia swerved to avoid hitting another boy who stopped to fix his bike chain. That boy also took the stand.
"I looked back and saw a silver car speeding," said the teen, "and then when I looked back, the car was coming. The car went past me and I felt wind from the car. I saw the car swerve, hit Dylan's bike and hit the two cars and garage."
The state will continue to call its witnesses when the trial resumes Wednesday.
