Neighbors help save neighbors while apartment building burns

LOUISVILLE (WAVE) - Eight people are in local hospitals, one person with critical injuries, after an apartment fire in south Louisville off Southside Drive.

The original call to the complex on Colonial Oaks Ct. went out at 2:45 a.m., with reports of a possible rescue.  At 3:05 a call went out for additional fire crews.

Firefighters say the fire started on the first floor, most likely on a sofa, and spread to the second floor, affecting 8 apartments in all.  The man with the most serious injuries lived in the apartment above where the fire started.

Witnesses say at one point parents living on the second floor tossed their 3-year-old to people waiting below to escape the flames and smoke, before jumping the distance themselves.  Another man broke a window to pull his disabled neighbor to safety.

The eight injured were taken to U of L and St. Mary's hospitals.
