Spalding To Inaugurate Ninth President

(LOUISVILLE, September 16th, 2003, 4 p.m.) -- Spalding University is officially welcoming its ninth president at the end of September.

The inauguration of Jo Ann Rooney, J.D., LL.M. will be Saturday, September 27th, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Assumption in downtown Louisville. It will be preceded by an Inaugural Mass on Friday, September 26th at 2 o'clock.

Rooney is from West Hazelton, Pennsylvania, and earned the Master of Laws (LL.M.), the legal profession's highest academic degree, from the Boston University School of Law. She holds the Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School and the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Boston University.

Rooney became president of Spalding University in 2002 after serving since 1994 as chief counsel, chief operating officer, chief financial officer, and partner of The Lyons Companies in Watham, Massachusetts.

Rooney served on the graduate and undergraduate faculties of Boston's Emmanuel College, where she taught management and law and served as director of special projects.

Rooney has practiced law in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Florida, U.S. District Court, and U.S. Tax Court and is a member of the Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Florida Bar Associations.

She currently serves on the boards of Kentuckiana Metroversity, the Louisville Science Center, the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Science Center, the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities, and Greater Louisville, Inc. She is a parishioner and member of the parish council at Louisville's Holy Trinity Church. Rooney is an avid sailor and has sailed and crewed on modern sloops, wooden schooners, and the Australian tall ship Endeavor. She has participated in numerous triathlons in New England and is an enthusiastic mountain biker.
