Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area finally re-opens

Posted: Updated:

BRANDENBURG, KY (WAVE) - Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear and First Lady Jane Beshear helped other state officials in announcing the grand re-opening of Otter Creek Recreation Area in Meade County on Wednesday.

The park was closed in December of 2008 due to Metro budget cuts, but Governor Beshear says the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife has acquired the 2,261 acre park and will now oversee its operations.

"The Department of Fish and Wildlife will cover the cost of operating and managing this area, not only for hunting and fishing but for a variety of recreational uses."

The new Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area will offer a wide range of outdoor activities including horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, hunting and more.

Admission to the park will be $3 a day per person. For another $7 per day you can enjoy specialized activities such as the archery and shooting ranges.

Some facilities in need of repair, such as the Nature Center, will remain closed. The conference center overlooking the Ohio River will not be open due to the need for extensive renovation and repair. Overnight cabins will also no longer be open, but primitive camping areas and RV camping will be offered once an independent vendor is located.
