LOUISVILLE, KY - (WAVE) Two groups joined together today at the Belvedere to raise money and awareness in their quest to help those with brain injuries and brain tumors.
Wave 3's Dawne Gee joined survivors and industry professionals as they were "walking together." The event aligned the Brain Injury Alliance and the Michael Quinlan Brain Tumor Foundation.
"Kentucky has twice the brain injury rate of the United States" says Chell Austin of the Brain Injury Alliance. "1 out of 5 Kentucky families are affected. It's a widespread, somewhat well-kept secret."
One group especially hit hard by brain injuries is veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as 135,000 soliders have returned from action with brain injuries since 2000.
The group works to help those affected transition from military to civilian life.
